Introduction to the Journal

This therapeutic knitting and crochet journal is a gentle companion for people seeking steadiness, regulation and meaning through making but aren’t quite sure where to start.  Blending evidence-informed psychology with the quiet rhythm of handcraft, the journal offers a simple framework for using knitting or crochet as support during stress, overwhelm, anxiety and life transitions. It includes opportunities for brief reflection, practical guidance to get started, and optional prompts designed to be used alongside stitching — not instead of it. This is not a therapy program, but a hands-on wellbeing resource to be used imperfectly, at your own pace, and in your own way.

The contents

The journal includes a short, accessible exploration of the history of knitting and crochet and why rhythmic handwork can support emotional regulation and wellbeing.

Practical sections guide you to get started gently, with minimal materials and a focus on process rather than perfection. The core of the journal offers simple ways to use stitching as support during everyday stress, anxiety or overwhelm, alongside optional reflections, prompts and worksheets that can be written, sketched or skipped.

Space is intentionally left for your own notes and experiences, favourite patterns and yarns, events and resources allowing the journal to become a personal, evolving companion rather than a task to complete.

How to use it

This journal is designed to be used slowly and imperfectly. You may move through it in order, dip in and out, or return to the same pages many times. Use it alongside your knitting or crochet, allowing your hands to lead while words remain optional. Some pages invite reflection; others simply offer structure and support. There is no expectation to complete every section. This journal works best when used flexibly, in short moments, as a companion rather than a task.
