Supporting girls and women through periods of physical, emotional and psychological strain is central to the work at Slow Psychology. Many of the women we support are living with long-term health conditions, recovering from birth-related trauma, navigating menopause, or re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol, food or other habits that no longer serve. Others come seeking support during major life transitions such as grief and loss, relationship separation, retirement, or the ongoing demands of parenting or caring for others.

We regularly work with anxiety, low mood, chronic stress and burnout, particularly in women who have spent years caring for others and are now feeling depleted or disconnected from themselves. Our approach also supports women who are questioning meaning, identity and direction during midlife or other turning points.

Therapy at Slow Psychology is grounded in evidence-based practice, including cognitive behavioural approaches, and is informed by principles of lifestyle medicine that support sustainable wellbeing in everyday life. Where helpful, knitting and crochet may be used as gentle, practical tools to support regulation, focus and behaviour change — though this is always optional. Every session is tailored to your individual needs, preferences and pace.

groups

Slow Psychology offers two groups – The Healing Stitch and Healing Hands.  a therapeutic knitting and crochet group – the first of its kind in Australia.

Healing Hands is an action packed three hour group that focuses on sharing information and tools to get the most therapeutic benefits from knitting and crochet.

The Healing Stitch is a ten-session program that is offered in two blocks of five sessions each.  Sessions are conducted weekly and consist of the same participants each week.  The program takes a cognitive-behavioural (CBT) approach and as such is evidence-based, with topics including: the neuroscience of knitting & crochet, core beliefs, window of tolerance, self-compassion, perfectionism, behavioural activation (action before motivation) and mindfulness.  We use knitting and crochet to apply the principles of CBT and in the process have fun, drink cups of tea, establish connections with others, learn from others and just generally
enjoy the process.

A medicare rebate applies to these sessions if you have a mental health care plan in place.  Medicare provides up to ten individual sessions with a psychologist in addition to ten group sessions.
You can continue to see your psychologist for individual sessions as well as attending the group sessions.

Groups run for 90 minutes and are held weekly at the same time, with a maximum of six participants.  We are always happy to answer any questions you may have.  Please feel free to email to arrange a time to discuss.

community events

A free community group Better Together is held each month for all community members to gather, connect and create rugs, hats, toys and other items to donate to children in care or other preferred charities.  This provides an opportunity to meet others with a passion for knitting, crochet and other hand crafts in a relaxed environment.  This isn’t a therapy group. Contact for more information on dates and times.

Training & Supervision

I provide comprehensive guidance and support to developing and experienced therapists through a collaborative and growth-oriented approach. I create a safe, reflective environment where supervisees can explore therapeutic challenges, reflect on interventions and develop their own unique clinical style.

I am particularly keen to provide supervision to others interested in incorporating therapeutic knitting and crochet into their own practice.  I also provide supervision and support to others who provide animal assisted therapy with their therapy dogs, or to those exploring introducing animal assisted therapy into their clinical practice.

We’d love to be part of your journey
